BARF Diet

"BARF" means Bones and Raw Food or Biologically Appropriate Raw Food.  It is a highly nutritious, safe and natural way to feed your cat or dog.

The BARF diet is based upon what our pets have eaten throughout the centuries from wild to domestication, which is bones and raw food.  Dogs for instance are scavengers, in the wild they would eat anything that they came across.  They will hunt, kill and eat their prey raw, including the meat bones and intestines.  They would eat fruit that had fallen from trees and nuts and vegetable that they find on forest floors, herbs, eggs.  Anything to survive.

This all added up would give them everything they need in the way of vitamins, minerals, fatty acids and protein.  They need to eat foods that have live enzymes that work well with the gut system.

At the Holistic Animal Centre & Best Pets our main focus is on nutrition.  We believe that the BARF diet should make up the largest part of your animals diet.  With the percentages as follows:

Canine: 1/3 Raw meat and bones, 1/3 vegetables, 1/3 Carbohydrates such as brown rice, pasta or museli.

Feline: 2/3 Raw meat, the balance can be vegetables and/or museli.

Bones are very important in your dogs diet, especially bones they can eat completely such as chicken necks, brisket and soft bones.  This gives them all the vitamins and minerals from the bone marrow and also is great for keeping teeth and gums clean with the massaging and chewing motion.

We also offer a great range of natural biscuits to cater for cats and dogs. They are a great accompaniment to the BARF diet providing added proteins, carbohydrates and other necessary vitamins and minerals. Our 'Sea Biscuits' and 'Meal Maker' biscuits are packed full of meats and fats, whole grains, sea kelps, green lipped mussel powder and a number of other ingredients beneficial to the nutritional health of your pet, they also contain no chemicals, artificial preservatives or fillers.

We are always happy to discuss your animal’s nutritional needs with you.
